MN39: Mahā-Assapura Sutta - Greater Discourse at Assapura

"The Buddha elucidates 'the things that make one a recluse' with a discourse covering many aspects of the Bhikkhu's training" [Bhikkhu Bodhi].
Ajahn Brahm teaches this sutta on the gradual training, with lots of similes about the jhanas and the stages of the training: how to live up to the name 'recluse' or samana (in this context a Bhikkhu, Bhikkhuni or Buddhist lay person).  The core of the teaching is to overcome the five hindrances and then the jhanas are there waiting to happen, the three true knowledges are there waiting to happen, awakening is there waiting to happen.  That’s the path, he says.

MN36 Mahasaccaka Sutta - The Greater Discourse to Saccaka (Part I)

Ajahn Brahmali teaches this sutta in two parts.  Part 1 is up to paragraph 20, covering the 'development of the body' and the 'development of the mind’, and the middle way as the avoidance of both the pleasures and the pains of the five senses.

MN69 Gulissani Sutta

"The venerable Sariputta gives a discourse on the proper training for a forest-dwelling bhikkhu" [Bhikkhu Bodhi].
Ajahn Brahm brings out the similarities and differences between forest and town monks in Buddha's time, as expressed by the gradual training, and the real meaning of "Abhi" in Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya (para17).  The sutta is a reminder of why monks and nuns go forth.

MN70 Kitagiri Sutta

MN70 Kitagiri Sutta: At Kitagiri
"The Buddha admonishes a group of disobedient monks, in the course of which he presents an important sevenfold classification of noble disciples" [Bhikkhu Boodhi].
Follow the pleasures that lead to wholesome states, that indicate progress on the path to awakening through more peace, more kindness, more wisdom.  Avoid those pleasures that lead to unwholesome states.
In the sevenfold classification, Ajahn Brahm points out that paragraph 16 on noble disciples 'liberated-by-wisdom' is often misquoted.  This should not be read as meaning that awakening is possible without the Jhanas, he says.

MN19 Dvedhavitakka Sutta - Two Sorts of Thinking

Ajahn Appichato gives a sutta class on MN19 Dvedhavitakka Sutta - Two Sorts of Thinking.
"Here the Buddha recounts the events leading up to his Awakening, and describes his discovery that thoughts connected with sensuality, ill-will, and harmfulness do not lead one to Awakening, while those connected with their opposites (renunciation, non ill-will, and harmlessness) do" [Majjhima Nikaya, tr. Bikkhu Bodhi, 3rd ed., 1995, Wisdom Publications].
The sutta is about thoughts as defilements, but Ajahn brings out how this applies even more powerfully to the undercurrents of feeling and emotion that drive behaviour.
